Fatherhood is perhaps the very greatest joy that you will ever experience in your life but it can also be pretty terrifying at first.

There is no doubt that bringing a new human into the world is a big responsibility and for that reason it is natural to wonder whether or not you are ready to handle everything that comes with being a parent.

My guess is that you instinctually already have what it takes to be a great dad but even with that being the case it can help to have some reading materials to prepare you for what’s ahead.

Today we will highlight a few books that will help you on your journey through fatherhood.

The Expectant Father: The Expectant Father is something of a classic parenting books. One of the best aspects of this book (at least as far as I am concerned) is that it doesn’t read as a manual. The Expectant Father is a warm, helpful account of the things that you can expect to encounter once your child is born.

The text is informative, but at points entertaining, and always completely optimistic. Why is it optimistic? Because you are entering into the very best part of your life, of course!

If you are feeling unsure of yourself or nervous about your ability to be a father this is a great book to consider. It’s tender, gentle approach to the topic is going to help boost your confidence.

Be Prepared by Gary Greenberg: Be Prepared is a book that gives fathers a no-nonsense look at some of the tougher aspects of the journey that is before them. Of course, the text is not meant to frighten you. Far from it, in fact. The very purpose of this book is to do exactly what the title suggests it is meant to do: get you prepared.

It’s a survival guide that will help provide you with both practical, and sometimes humorous advice. Do you want to know how to change a diaper while out at a sporting event? Of course you do. Want to learn how to look like you aren’t debilitatingly tired at work? Probably not, but you are going to need to.

The book is at times silly, at times serious, but always very useful. If you are looking for a parenting book that provides useful information in a fun way this is a really excellent text to consider.

What to Expect When Your Wife is Expanding by Thomas Hill: This book was originally written as something of a gag on the classic What to Expect When You are Expecting. The advice was meant to be helpful but mostly humorous and that was pretty much it.

Over time however the text grew to be something more. People came to understand that What to Expect When You Wife is Expanding is filled with useful information that will genuinely help the expectant father prepare for what is ahead. If you are looking for a book that will both prepare you for your journey as a father and ease your nerves by presenting the information in a light and friendly way this is an excellent book to consider.

Dad’s Playbook By Tom Limbert: This book isn’t as much of a manual as it is a text that is meant to inspire and motivate new fathers. The book compiles over one hundred quotes from coaches in a variety of sports on fatherhood. The quotes aren’t going to tell you how to change a diaper or feed your child, but they will help you to feel confident about your abilities as a father.

If you are a sports fan or you just enjoy a good quote to keep you motivated this is a great book to consider.

The New Father: A Dad’s Guide to the First Year: The great thing about this book is that there are sequels! That’s right, if you like what you get with this book you are in luck because there is a long line of similar titles that will guide you to raising a toddler as well teenagers, etc. etc.

The New Father: A Dad’s Guide to the First Year is a comprehensive but entertaining look at the first year of being a parent. It will provide you with information on everything from late night diaper changes to feeding your baby and everything in between.

This is a good book for anyone really, but people that think they may take advantage of parenting texts in the future as well are rally going to benefit from this series.

What to Expect When You are Expecting By Heidi Murkoff: The final book that we will be looking at is technically for mothers but I include it on this list as well because it has helped hundreds of thousands of men in the past (including myself) and I think that it is a great way for fathers to learn how to help their child as well as their significant other.

What to Expect When You are Expecting is a comprehensive guide to both pregnancy and the months that follow after your child is born. It details the foods that your significant other can eat, as well what sort of changes that her body will go through. It will also give you some detailed information on things that come after your baby is born like burpings, feedings, and other important things that you need to know about keeping your baby safe after they are born.

This is a great book for fathers that want to know how to be there for their partner as well as their child.

Conclusion:

As you can see there are plenty of great books out there on parenting. Giving them a read is undoubtedly going to be an excellent way to prepare yourself for what is ahead. However, try not to stress out too much. Fatherhood is going to be full of surprises, but they are incredible surprises. They will be the best surprises of your life, in fact. Whatever happens in the next days weeks, months and years that can come you can handle it.
